Spirits of the Red City

Spirits of the Red City is a folk rock band based out of Minnesota that basically just makes beautiful music. They combine slow, sad hooks and catchy banjo riffs to create some really thoughtful tunes. Their debut LP, Hunter Moon, is a collection of mournful songs that definitely showcase the awesomeness that is modern folk. Below are two of my favorite songs from the album, "Constant" and "Can't Come Home", check them out!

Phosphorescent

For my first post I'm going to showcase this blog's namesake, Phosphorescent. This one man band creates such heartfelt folk/indie tunes it only takes one listen to fall in love with his music. To date Phosphorescent has put out 4 full length LP's and one EP, all of which are filled with spectacularly emotional songs, best experienced when sitting on your front porch, smoking a pipe, and taking in nature's beauty. His raw instrumentation and raspy vocals are reminiscent of Band of Horses' Ben Bridwell, and they blend together to create intensely beautiful tunes that you'll find yourself humming all day long. Below are two songs that I believe best showcase Phosphorescent's music, "South (of Africa)" from his 2005 album, Aw Come Aw Wry, and "Mrs. Juliette Low" from his 2004 EP, The Weight of Flight.
